Background Information

Council established the 'Resident Precinct System' in 1991 as a means by which residents could feed their ideas to Council. The Precinct Committees have been established and supported by Council, and provide an independent voice for residents. Some issues discussed at local Precinct Committee meetings include Development Applications, parks and landscape issues and local events, etc. The issues addressed by the Precinct Committees reflect their local environment and the make-up of their community.

In February 2006, Leichhardt Council established a Precinct Review Sunset Committee of Councillors and Precinct representatives to look at ways the 'Precinct Committee System' could be enhanced and how Council could further assist them.

In February 2008, Council formally endorsed the recommendations of the Precinct Review Sunset Committee including adopting:

  • a new policy for the 'Resident Precinct System' - to view, click on  Precinct Committee System - 22 KB
  • the 'Resident Precinct Policy & Guidelines for Leichhardt Municipality' manual drafted by volunteers
  • new Precinct area boundaries.
