Community and Cultural Planning
Community and Cultural Plan
A vibrant music and arts program at the Leichhardt and Balmain Town Halls and a program helping young high school students to develop the skills they need to stay with their education are some of the programs proposed in Leichhardt’s new Community and Cultural Plan.
With a ten year outlook, the Plan will see Council work with other agencies to found the Iron Cove Recreation and Cultural Precinct, aimed at linking existing community and cultural activities to a network of arts, recreation, environmental, and creative industry development support.
Council will invite local residents to work with them to create urban food, forests and biodiversity programs, and to develop social enterprises involving residents, local organisations and agencies.
Models that support a range of affordable and supported housing options will be developed and become part of Council’s land use policy.
Community consultation during development of the Plan helped Council to establish that our residents want to live in a safe, healthy and supportive community that creates a sense of belonging and encourages participation.
With a strong focus on our community priorities and values, the Plan is aimed at providing effective programs and services, nurturing social networks and developing a rich cultural life in Leichhardt. It connects community infrastructure spending, local services and activities with community priorities and values.
Council will use it to will guide initiatives and actions so that community and cultural initiatives are incorporated into all of Council’s planning.
The Plan has five main themes to allow Council to focus spending: Connecting People to each other; Connecting People to Place; Developing Community Strengths and Capabilities; Enlivening the Arts and Cultural Life; and Promoting Health and Wellbeing.
Some significant projects in 2011/12:
