Congratulations to all of our finalists this year. The judges had a challenging time

reducing all of the wonderful entries down to just a few finalists, but believe that they have chosen

a good cross range of styles and designs. Most importantly, they aimed to choose the designs that

best fit the sites on offer.

The judges this year are:

Sandra Winkworth: Council's November Artist of the Month, and talented printmaker.

Kerry Hunt: Building Coordinator Assessments and a passionate photographer in her free time.

Bronwyn Tuohy: Community Development Officer, Public Space Focus.

Please keep an eye out over the next few weeks and you may spot an artist at work at one of the

Insight sites.

Background Information on the Insight Out of Sight Art Competition

For the past four years Leichhardt Council has been livening up local streets by offering canvas space on traffic signal boxes as part of the Insight Out of Sight Art Competition.

Locals and visitors to the area will already know that almost all of the traffic signal boxes in the Leichhardt Local Government Area have been covered in creative designs already. In this, the competition’s fifth year, the last of the boxes went on offer to creative souls of all ages and skill levels. The finalists have been chosen, and will be competing to win the first and second places, which will be decided by the judges after the finalists have completed their designs.

All of the finalists are currently equal 3rd place winners, and have won the opportunity to feature their art on a traffic signal box in a high profile location in the Leichhardt Local Government Area.

Traffic signal boxes are normally those dull grey boxes that exist at every traffic light, and the judges were looking for entries for each site that delight, entertain and provoke thought. They were particularly interested in competition entries that evoked a sense of spirit and place in the locations in which they sit. A short history of each site was available to artists in the Box Locator document below, and entrants were encouraged to conduct their own research about the box site they choose.

Traffic signal boxes are an ideal size to become community art canvasses, and are an approachable scale for both new and long practising artists. Apart from winning a cash prize and the valuable promotional opportunity to showcase their skills, finalists are also offered a bite size opportunity to develop their skills in the installation of small scale public art, as all boxes are in public space. This means that the designs chosen will be on view 24/7 for a minimum of two years.

Also according to feedback from previous finalists, the community have been very supportive of artists at work, so artists and locals can enjoy connecting with each other on site.
