Sydney Metro Project

COUNCIL WELCOMES TRANSPORT ANNOUNCEMENT

VICTORY FOR COMMON SENSE

Message from the Mayor, Cr Jamie Parker - 24 February 2010

Leichhardt Council has welcomed the announcement over the weekend by the NSW Government to axe the Sydney Metro.

It’s a pity that this decision comes after hundreds of millions of dollars of public funds have been wasted along with a great deal of stress for our community.

The local community in Leichhardt and Marrickville Municipalities have campaigned for over ten years to win the light rail extension to Dulwich Hill operated by a publicly owned transport provider.

The announcement of $500 million for the extension to Dulwich Hill and the CBD Loop from Haymarket to Circular Quay will no doubt hearten the community but the Government will need to integrate the ticketing for light rail with all other forms of public transport.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the Councillors who supported this campaign, local residents, precinct committees, and local businesses who have stood united in opposing this monumental waste of public funds.

Whilst welcoming this announcement, we are also disappointed that the major elements of a transport plan for Sydney have been delayed for many years; particularly the North West rail link which has been delayed even further until 2017.

The real question is the credibility of the plan and the capacity of the government to deliver. We will be working closely with the government over the coming months to ensure that the light rail plans and the wider commitments on buses and ferries are carried out.

It is now up to Council to continue pushing the NSW Government to ensure that the project proceeds without delay and that the light rail extension is delivered to the community without delay.

the NSW Government has commenced planning and preperation for the construction of a Metro style rail system for Sydney.

Cr Jamie Parker

Mayor of Leichhardt

West Metro - Proposed Location of worksites

Part of the Sydney Metro Proposal is the West Metro link between the CBD and and Parramatta via Leichhardt and Homebush.  the Sydney Metro Authority recently released the preliminary Environment Assessment for the project identifying proposed worksites as Lambert Park and Algie Park in Haberfield.

At its Ordinary meeting on Tuesday 25 August 2009, Leichhardt Council unanimously resolved to oppose the proposed worksite locations and to negotiate in good faith with the Sydney Metro Authority to find alternative locations for the worksites.  For more information on where the proposed stations and worksites are to be, click here.

CBD Metro

The Sydney Metro Authority have proposed that the CBD Metro link will run from Central station to Rozelle as the 1st stage with plans to run further west in the future.  Whilst Leichhardt has not taken a formal decision to oppose the CBD Metro project, we are strongly opposed to the compulsory acquisition of heritage properties and residential homes for demolition to accommodate a station for the CBD Metro.

A very successful rally was held on Saturday 15 August to protest against the compulsory acquisition of the properties at the intersection of Darling Street and Victoria Road, Rozelle.  for more information on the campaign to Save Rozelle's Heritage, visit their website at http://www.saverozellesheritage.org/
