Weddings in Parks

Leichhardt Council permits wedding ceremonies and photos in our parks (not wedding receptions).

  • Chairs, marques and other structures may be permitted, with prior approval of Council.
  • Consumption of large volumes of alcohol (cartons and kegs) is not permitted in Council parks.
  • Generally weddings of over 100 people are not permitted.
  • Parking is very limited at many of our parks, so alternative transport such as walking, ferry or shuttle bus may need to be arranged for large groups.

For more information on booking a park for a wedding go to: Booking a Park/Sporting Ground.

Parks Recommended for Weddings

Parks Recommended for Weddings

Elkington Park
Glassop St, Balmain
This is perhaps our most popular park for weddings. The 1936 band rotunda is a popular feature as it provides shelter in the event of inclement weather. Additionally, the view from, and the romantic history of White Horse Point (*see below) at the northern edge of Elkington Park is another reason why this is our most popular location. Many couples book both areas either with the rotunda as a backup in the event of rain, or they use the rotunda for the ceremony and then White Horse Point for the photographs.

Thornton Park
Darling St, Balmain East
This manicured park with a rose garden is situated at the end of Darling St. There are large lawn areas and a view to the Harbour Bridge.

Illoura Reserve
Weston St, Balmain East
This native bushland reserve takes in views of the Harbour Bridge and darling harbour

Peacock point
(The southern point within Illoura reserve)
This area has views towards Darling Harbour and Pyrmont, and the sandstone staircase provides a wonderful area for photographs or a focal point for the ceremony.

Yurulbin Park
Louisa Rd, Birchgrove
This native bushland reserve was a former shipbuilding site and has been restored into one of the most beautiful secluded spots on the Harbour.
The award winning park contains a lawn area and a wooden viewing platform, both with views to the Harbour Bridge

Ewenton Park
Jubilee Place, Balmain
Ewenton is a quiet park in the shape of a natural amphitheatre that leads to a sandstone feature at the waters edge. Ewenton captures views to Darling harbour, and is next to the architecturally splendid Ewenton House.

Pioneers Memorial Park
Norton St, Leichhardt
The former Balmain Cemetery was restored into a public park in 1944. The park contains a magnificent sandstone arch, and the unique rotunda.  The beautiful gardens are another attraction as is the proximity to the Norton Street restaurants.
