The Roads and Traffic Authority introduced a Graduated Licensing Scheme (GLS) for new drivers on 1 July 2000. The scheme aims to help young drivers gain more experience. Currently all learners must have at least 120 hours of supervised on-road driving experience. New drivers are required to pass through three licensing stages before obtaining a full licence:
On 1 July 2007, several changes were introduced to licensing laws regarding young drivers. Additional changes were also introduced in October 2008. Further changes will be introduced to the Graduated Licensing Scheme for novice drivers on 19 December 2009. These changes regard concessions for the 120 hours of supervised on-road driving if using an accredited driving instructor. One hour of structured driving tuition by a professional driving instructor will count for three hours in the learner driver log book and will be capped at a maximum of 10 one hour lessons (counting as 30 log book hours). Another change involves learners who are over the age of 25 years old - they will no longer be required to present a log book. For more information about these changes, click on the following link

Leichhardt and Marrickville Councils, with the support of the RTA, provide the local workshops to assist parents and supervisors of novice drivers better understand the graduated licensing system and support them in the increasing role they can play in making learner drivers safer drivers.
